Q:
I was diagnosed with stage 0 bladder cancer. Which treatment can I take?
A:
Stage 0 is the earliest stage of bladder cancer. With prompt treatment, it often leads to a good consequence. Both non-invasive papillary carcinoma and flat non-invasive carcinoma belong to stage 0 bladder cancer. In these two cases, cancer cells are confined to the bladder wall.
For early stage bladder cancer, the most common treatment is transurethral resection (TURBT). It is often followed by regular observation or intravesical therapy to avoid recurrence.
Among intravesical treatments, immunotherapy with Bacille-Calmette Guerin (BCG) is a better choice compared with chemotherapy. However, it brings more side effects.
Usually, extensive surgery is not needed for early stage bladder cancer. But if there are many superficial cancers or a superficial cancer continues to grow in spite of the treatment, cystectomy should be taken into consideration to stop it from becoming worse.
