Where did HIV come from?
HIV, human immunodeficiency virus, is first identified in the 1980s. Since then, a spectrum of research has been conducted to explore the origin of this virus.
Thanks to the earliest found sample of HIV, scientists have been able to identify the source of HIV transmission, making it possible for them to discover where this virus started.
Their research showed that the first transmission of SIV to HIV in human beings occurred in the 1920s in Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo, country located in central Africa). Many of the first AIDS cases took place there too.
