How long can a person with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy live? What’s the life expectancy and survival rate?
About 2% to 3% of people with HCM die from sudden cardiac death (the heart suddenly stops beating) each year. As for people with HCM for over 10 years, the risk of sudden cardiac death can be as high as 20% or even more.
Life expectance for people with HCM varies. The condition of many patients remains stable. In some cases, the condition improves, while in some it becomes worse in signs and leads to a shorter and more difficult life. If they want to prolong their life, medicine treatment and careful medical supervision are necessary in the rest of their life. However, some people with HCM who experience minor or even no symptom have near normal life expectancy
