What’s the Life Expectancy for Brittle Diabetes?

Q:
What’s the life expectancy for brittle diabetes?

A:
Brittle diabetes refers to a severe form of diabetes. It’s characterized by unpredictable swings in blood sugar levels. So, it is also called labile (liable to change) diabetes.

Some say brittle diabetes is a subtype, while others think it’s a complication. Anyway, it’s most associated with type 1 diabetes; it rarely occurs in people with type 2 diabetes.

For type 1 diabetes, the life expectancy is about 10 to 20 years shorter than average. For brittle diabetes the situation may be worse.
