What should kids eat after tonsillectomy?
During the recovery period, it’s important for your child to get enough rest. It’s also important to make sure your child gets plenty of fluids; however, you should avoid giving your child milk products for the first 24 hours after a tonsillectomy.
Although throat pain may make your child reluctant to eat, the sooner your child eats, the sooner he or she will recover.
Here are some tips about how to choose foods:
- Bland foods that are easy to swallow, such as applesauce or broth, are the best choices immediately after surgery.
- Foods such as ice cream and pudding can be added to the diet if they’re tolerated.
- Foods that are easy to chew and swallow should be added to the diet as soon as possible.
- Avoid acidic, spicy, hard or crunchy foods as they may cause pain or bleeding.
