What should I know about gallstone ileus?
It is a rare but important cause of mechanical bowel obstruction. It affects older adult patients who have other serious medical conditions.
Gallstone ileus is caused by impaction of a gallstone in the ileum after being passed through a biliary-enteric fistula. The diagnosis is often delayed since symptoms may be intermittent. Treatment usually involve removal of the obstructing stone. People who live with gallstone ileus have a high rate of mortality.
It is a rare complication of cholelithiasis. It develops in less than 0.5% of patients suffering mechanical small bowel obstruction. Women are disproportionally affected.
