Treatment for RSV is various depends on the severity of infections. In general, the treatment for RSV includes self-care and hospital care.
Self-care
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Use nasal saline drops to clear a stuffy nose.
- Take antibiotics to treat a bacterial complication.
- Keep the air moist to breathe better.
- Take over-the-counter medication, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, others), to reduce fever.
Hospital care
- Humidified oxygen.
- Intravenous (IV) fluids.
- Mechanical ventilation (breathing machine).
- Use ribavirin (Virazole). (only for people with very weakened immune systems)
