What is the definition of RHD?
Although rheumatic heart disease (RHD) has been increasing rare in the developed world, it is still common in children and young adults. The medical definition of RHD is active or inactive disease of the heart that results from rheumatic fever and that is characterized by reduced functional capacity of the heart caused by inflammatory changes in the myocardium or scarring of the valves.
One single severe or recurrent rheumatic fever can lead to RHD. RHD is totally preventable, but it can’t be cured. Therefore, it is really important to promote the awareness and use medications to prevent rheumatic fever from turning into RHD.
