Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, also known as takotsubo syndrome, is a temporary condition in which there is a sudden enlargement of the heart muscles.

It is a type of non-ischemic cardiomyopathy and occurs following extreme emotional stress. This condition is also called broken heart syndrome and apical ballooning syndrome.

The most typical symptom of takotsubo cardiopathy is a sudden onset of chest pain. It is mostly seen in postmenopausal women after a recent severe, emotional or physical stress.
