What is neurogenic claudication?
A:
Neurogenic claudication (NC), or referred as pseudo claudication, is a common condition associated with spinal stenosis, which is characterized by pain and cramping in the lower muscle weakness, numbness, tingling, spasms and neurogenic claudication.
Causes
NC is a classic symptom of lumbar stenosis, which is caused by a number of conditions, including:
- Bone spurs;
- Bulging discs;
- Herniated discs;
- Facet joint cysts;
- Spondylolisthesis;
- Arthritis of the spine.
Treatments
First of all, pain medications, physical therapy and hot / cold compresses would be used as conservative treatments to relieve symptoms.
Then, if conservative treatment failed to adequately control the symptoms, the minimally invasive spine surgery may be the best option for pain relief.
