Q:
What is neisseria meningitidis?
A:
Neisseria meningitidis is a type of bacterium that can cause meningitis. People who are infected with the bacteria have a high rate of death if not treated.
The bacteria, in the worst case, can lead to fulminant meningococcemia. Patients may become very ill in just a few hours. Organ failure and hypotension are possible results of the disease. Even after treatment, 10-15% of the patients may die and about 20% of those who survive have sequelae for the rest of their life.
Each year, 1.2 million people become ill because of it. Annual deaths caused by it is 135,000.
