What Is Heart Failure?

What is heart failure?

The function of the heart is pumping blood around the body, making oxygen and nutrients available to all the muscles and organs throughout your body. When there is something wrong with the heart, it can’t pump blood as effectively as it used to, leading to less blood circulating around the body. So your body can’t get enough oxygen and nutrients to work efficiently.

Heart failure consists of a collection of symptoms. When the heart does not work well, these signs appear. The reason may be the dilation of the heart in dilated cardiomyopathy, the thickening of the ventricular walls in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or other diseases. An enlarged, weakened, or damaged heart can affect how well it contracts.

The term heart failure sounds scary. It does not mean that the heart fails completely. It still works but its function is not as good as it should be. Prompt treatment is needed to make it work properly.
