The cause of conjunctival xerosis is a vitamin A deficiency. Thanks to the high general standard of nutrition, this eye disorder is very rare in the developed countries. However, it is one of the most frequent causes of blindness in developing world.
Vitamin A deficiency results in keratinization of the superficial epithelial cells of the eye. The condition disappears after local and systemic vitamin A substitution. If not, the disorder will lead to blindness within a few years.
