Broken heart syndrome can also be called takotsubo cardiomyopathy or stress-induced cardiomyopathy.

It tends to occur under stressful circumstances, such as a breakup, the death of a loved one, domestic violence, or a job loss. In rare cases, some drugs may also trigger the disease. Besides, it occurs more in women.

The symptoms of the condition are similar to those of a heart attack, including chest pain and shortness of breath.
