Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), also called acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis, is a rare autoimmune disease marked by a sudden, widespread attack of inflammation in the brain and spinal cord.
ADEM also attacks the nerves of the central nervous system and damages their myelin insulation, thus destroying the white matter. It is often triggered by viral infections, or rarely specific non-routine vaccinations.
Symptoms of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis often begin 1-3 weeks after infections. Major symptoms include nausea, confusion, vision impairment, seizures, coma, headache, vomiting, drowsiness, etc.
