What does variant angina refer to?
Variant angina is a type of angina and it is very rare. Stable angina tends to happen when you exercise. By contrast, variant angina usually occurs when you are at rest. Besides, it is more severe than stable angina.
The cause is a spasm in a coronary artery. The spasm makes the walls of the artery tighter, so the artery narrows. As a result, there is less oxygen-rich blood flowing to the heart muscle, triggering pain in the chest.
