What does tortuosity of aorta mean?
Tortuosity of aorta may be characterized by a twisted, curved, enlarged or narrowed blood vessel of the heart. It occurs more commonly in women than in men, and the commonly affected people are those who are older than 50 years old.
Tortuosity of aorta, also called tortuous aorta, may be found from birth. The buildup of fatty tissues collecting on the walls of the vessels is an underlying cause of it.
When developing tortuous aorta, people may present symptoms such as:
- Depressed mood
- Anxious mood
Tortuosity of aorta is a type of arterial tortuosity syndrome. It can be diagnosed via genetic testing, CT, MRI, Echocardiogram, physical exam, etc.
