Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a condition that the blood clot forms in a vein. VTE can form anywhere in your body and blocks blood flow.
VTE which forms in the deep veins in the legs, thighs, pelvis, or arms is called a deep venous thrombosis (DVT).
There are several risk factors that may increase the risks for VTE, they are:
- Pregnancy and childbirth
- Medical conditions, like obesity or cancer
- Smoking
- Recent surgery
- Prolonged bed time
- Family history of VTE
- Clotting disorder
- Hormone replacement therapy
- Birth control pills
