Q:
What are the symptoms of cervical spine cancer?
A:
- Neck Pain
Neck pain is the most common presenting sign on women with a cervical spine tumor. Unlike neck pain due to overstraining and other causes that goes away with a good neck massage, neck pain in cervical spine cancer is unrelenting. The patient even can’t sleep because of the pain. Traditional measures do not work in this case.
- Neck Stiffness (Difficulty in Head Movement)
A healthy person’s neck is very flexible. His neck is capable of a 180 degree turn from left to the right or right to the left. But a patient with cervical spine cancer can’t do it. His head movement is limited, for his neck is stiff. Even a small movement of the head is extremely painful.
- Weakening of Limbs
Tumor growth in the spine squeezes the nerves that radiate towards the limbs. Therefore, proper limb movement is blocked. The pressure causes pain and numbness which haunt the patient even in his rest. In a very serious case, the patient loses both his motor control and bladder control.
- Other Symptoms
Other symptoms include night sweats, fatigue, malaise, low-grade fever, and loss of appetite
