Though thyroid surgery is a generally safe surgery, there are some potential complications:
Hoarse or weak voice. During the procedure, the nerves which control the patient’s voice can be damaged. If you want to avoid this risk, you should let an experienced surgeon perform the surgery.
Hypoparathyroidism. If the parathyroid glands, which are located near the thyroid gland, are damaged or mistakenly removed in the surgery, hypoparathyroidism can occur. This is more likely to happen in a total thyroidectomy.
Other complications include infection, bleeding and airway obstruction caused by bleeding.
