Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a lung disease that occurs when scars are formed in the lung. It can cause serious breathing problems. If you get idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, you may have symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, nail clubbing, a dry cough and unexplained weight loss.

There is no cure for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, but some medications can slow the progression and ease symptoms.

There are two medications that have been approved by the FDA for treating idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. One is pirfenidone (Esbriet) and another is nintedanib (Ofev). They can help slow the progression and make you breathe better.

But the medications have some side effects. The side effects of pirfenidone include rash, nausea and diarrhea. Nintedanib can lead to side effects like diarrhea and nausea.
