Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a very contagious respiratory illness. The causes of whooping cough is clear—a type of bacteria called Bordetella pertussis. These bacteria just stay in your cilia in the upper respiratory system such as tiny, hair-like extensions, releasing toxins to damag the cilia. As a result, your airway swell and you can’t stop coughing.
Pertussis is contagious, spreading from person to person. So if you have the pertussis, you better not spend too long with your family specially your kids or your parents with relative weak immunity. Any coughing or sneezing within the same space would make them sick. Antibiotics here under your doctor’s prescription would be a helper.
Vaccines are the most effective tool to prevent this disease, however, no vaccine is 100% effective.
