LGL (Large granular lymphocyte) leukemia is a rare cancer of white blood cells called lymphocytes. Lymphocytes originate in the lymph system and bone marrow, they are functioned as fighting infection.
There exist two types of LGL leukemia: T-cell (T-LGL) and natural killer cell (NK-LGL). Each type may be slow-growing and fast-growing.
Common symptoms of LGL leukemia may present as follows:
- Anemia
- Unexpected weight loss
- Spleen enlargement
- Night sweats
- Recurrent infections
- Hepatomegaly
- Fever
- Red cell aplasia
LGL leukemia affects both men and women, the median diagnosis age is 60 years old, less than a quarter of patients are younger than 50 years old. The 5-year survival rate is about 89%.
