My mom, 52 years old, was diagnosed with diabetic cardiomyopathy yesterday. What signs will this disease cause?
Diabetic cardiomyopathy is a form of heart muscle disorder in patients with diabetics. In most cases, people with diabetics get affected by the illness because of coronary artery disease. Diabetic cardiomyopathy can disrupt blood circulation by weakening the pumping ability of the heart and cause heart failure. Fluid may accumulate in the lungs or legs, and lead to pulmonary edema or peripheral edema.
At early stage, the patient may experience mild left ventricular diastolic dysfunction with little effect on ventricular filling. Meanwhile, the person with diabetics may show symptoms of diabetic cardiomyopathy related to left ventricular hypertrophy or decreased left ventricular compliance or a combination of both. Most symptoms of the condition are the same with those of cardiomyopathy, such as fatigue, dizziness, swollen abdomen and etc.
