Pomegranate stops the aging process

The pomegranate is no doubt the fruit of beauty. Now, for the first time, a human study found  why the wonderful fruit can beat the age.

The pomegranate is native to India and Iran. It is one of the first fruits ever to be cultivated. When the pomegranate came to Europe, people were immediately fascinated by its perfected shape and its special aroma. The pomegranate is also an ancient remedy that has been a symbol of beauty and eternal life for millennia.

In Indian Ayurvedic medicine, the pomegranate is still a component of numerous formulations and is often used because of its anti-inflammatory effect, for example in diarrhea, ulcers, gum problems, but also in hypertension.

Why is the pomegranate so healthy?

The fruit is rich in Vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals.  These include in particular the ellagitannins, which are contained in the edible seeds in a particularly high concentration.Various studies have shown that ellagitannins act against inflammation and free radicals, protect against dementia and serve the prevention of infectious diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer and cardiovascular diseases. The findings of research often coincide with the applications of pomegranate in traditional medicine.

Swiss researchers published a groundbreaking study in 2019. Because they were able to prove to humans for the first time that the pomegranate counteracts aging processes. Responsible for this is the substance Urolithin A. Unlike often stated, but this is not in the pomegranate itself and in any other food. Because urolithin A is formed by the intestinal bacteria from ellagitannins.

The study included 60 elderly volunteers divided into four groups. They received either 250, 500 or 1,000 milligrams of Urolithin A or a placebo daily for 28 days. Side effects did not occur. The researchers then found that urolithin A boosted mitochondrial growth. Mitochondria are tiny organelles within the body cells that provide us with life energy. They become less and less active as they get older, which leads to age-typical energylessness and weakness. But Urolithin A is able to re-activate the mitochondria. As a result, for example, an age-related muscle weakness can be improved.

A glass of pomegranate juice per day works wonders.

It is already working feverishly to bring a drug with the active ingredient urolithin A on the market. Of course you could just eat the pomegranate regularly or drink your juice. Because the wonderful fruit finally provides the body Ellagitannine and thus the starting substance for urolithin A.

Many studies have already shown that the pomegranate and the juices and extracts produced from it have a very high medicinal potential as well as an anti-aging effect. It is thus by no means necessary to resort to a single active substance. The pomegranate itself also offers a decisive advantage compared to a preparation with urolithin A. Because here an interaction of different ingredients prevails, which complement each other and reinforce each other in their effect.

According to those studies, which are presented in the article linked above, the pomegranate helps very well with high blood pressure, arthritis, diabetes, and sarcoidosis, when daily (330 mL) drinking a big glass of pomegranate juice – ideally divided into two portions.
