What is the life expectancy of liver cirrhosis patients?

The life expectancy of patients depends on the seriousness of their cirrhosis.

In general, a patient with cirrhosis but without major complications may live for another 12 years or even longer.

For patients with decompensated cirrhosis, the life expectancy may be 6 months to 2 years. Liver transplant may extend the life expectancy by about 50%.

To live longer, patients should:

  • stop drinking alcohol (if applicable)
  • take in enough vitamins and lean proteins
  • take counter hepatitis drug carefully
  • exercise reasonably to improve physical conditions
