Is the Gastric Bypass Surgery Good for Diabetes?

Q:

I am on a diet for my diabetes. But it seems to hard for me to lose my weight. Do I need the gastric bypass surgery? Is it really good for diabetes management?

A:
I don’t think you should try this surgery unless you have the following conditions:
• With a BMI of 35 or higher.
• Weight loss difficulty.

An adjustable gastric band may be used only after your efforts on diet and exercise. Once you have decided to fit an adjustable band inside your stomach, you should perform a detailed checkup in all aspects under your doctor’s directions.

In February 2011, FDA approved of adjustable gastric bands to patients with a BMI between 30 and 40 and one weight-related medical condition, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. So the safety of this surgery is almost guaranteed.

However, for the diabetic who also has other diseases such as heart disease, kidney disease, ask for professional advice as much as possible.
