Is Depression Different from Anxiety?

Q:
Is depression different from anxiety?

A:
Yes, they are different from each other. The fact that they are hard to tell apart does not mean that they are the same thing.

First, anxiety and depression have different symptoms. People suffering from anxiety feel worried about what may happen in the future or things could go wrong. They feel the need to avoid anything that might lead to more anxiety. On the other hand, those who live with depression feel hopeless and sad about the future. They are certain that only bad things will happen in the future. Patients can be suicidal.
The physical symptoms of the two conditions are different as well. Symptoms for anxiety include sweating, shaking, racing heart, hyperventilation and the urge to run. Symptoms of depression are headaches, huge changes in appetite, slowed thinking and lack of energy.
