Q:
Is constipation related to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?
A:
Constipation is related to IBS in that either chronic or intermittent constipation is often a symptom of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
IBS is a mix of belly discomfort or pain and trouble with bowel habits: either going more or less often than normal (diarrhea or constipation) or having a different kind of stool (thin, hard, or soft and liquid).
Although there are many ways to treat IBS, the exact cause of IBS is unknown. But it is common that patients of IBS have an overly sensitive colon or immune system.
