How to Cure Ear Infection?

Any antibiotics suggested for ear infection?

Not all cases of otitis require antibiotic therapy, but using antibiotics would be necessary if you have the symptoms like high fever, vomiting, moderate or severe ear pain and so on.

Here are some suggestions for antibiotics in treating ear infection:

  • Amoxicillin: It is the first-line therapy and the best antibiotic for ear infection because of its high effectiveness, favorable taste and reasonable cost.
  • Amoxicillin/Clavulanate (Augmentin®): It is more effective than amoxicillin when children with ear infections have a fever over 102.2 F (39°C) and when initial amoxicillin treatment fails.
  • Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim®): Acute ear infections and chronic active otitis media respond well to treatments with TMP-SMX, and it’s safe for children.
  • Cefuroxime (Ceftin®): It is often considered as second-line choice for the treatment of ear infections.
  • Cefpodoxime proxetil (Vantin®): It is effective against both pneumococci and beta-lactamase producing organisms.
  • Ceftriaxone (Rocephin®): It is very powerful and is typically reserved as an antibiotic of last resort. It is the right choice for children who have vomiting or other conditions that preclude oral administration of medications.
