How Long Does the Contagious Period of Pink Eye Last?

Q:
How long does the contagious period of pink eye last?

A:
There are three kinds of pink eye: viral, bacterial and allergic pink eye. It should be noticed that viral and bacterial pink eye are highly contagious and can be easily spread from person to person. Allergic pink eye is not contagious.

Pink eye can be highly contagious for as long as two weeks after its symptoms begin. When the pink eye becomes severe, its infectious ability also increases. So, shaking hands with people whose hands have attached with eye secretions, or touching the same place where people with pink eye have touched will increase the possibility of being infected.

To prevent being infected, you need:

  • Often wash hands with soap.
  • Do not touch your eyes.
  • Clean your eyeglasses and contact lenses
  • Use clean towels.
  • Often change your pillowcases.
  • Do not share your eye cosmetics.
