How is osteoarthritis diagnosed?

To diagnose an osteoarthritis, your doctor may need a combination of the following factors:

  • Your description of symptoms

  • Physical exam
  • Blood tests
  • Joint fluid analysis
  • X-rays
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

During the physical exam, your doctor will closely examine your affected joint, checking for tenderness, swelling or redness, and for range of motion in the joint.
