How does EMDR work?

EMDR means Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, it is one of the psychotherapies designed to help people with PTSD to alleviate the distress triggered by traumatic events.

An EMDR treatment session can last up to 90 minutes. The therapists will move their fingers back and forth in front of your face and ask you to follow these hand motions with your eyes. There are the following phases involved in EMDR:

  • Phase 1: The therapist assesses patient’s rediness and customizes a treatment plan.
  • Phase 2: The therapist teaches patients various imagery and stress reduction techniques to ensure they can handle emotional distresses during or between phases.
  • Phase 3-6: The therapist uses procedures to identify the vivid visual image in patient’s memory, patient’s negative belief, and patient’s related emotions and body sensations.
  • Phase 7: The therapist asks patient to keep a log during the week served to remind self-calming activities in phase 2.
  • Phase 8: The therapist examines the progress made by far.
