How do I prevent acid reflux?
The good news is that unlike many other conditions, acid reflux disease, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is almost completely preventable.
Here are some methods you can try to prevent acid reflux:
- Avoid foods that can cause reflux. Don’t consume chocolate, fatty or spicy foods, mint, onions, tomatoes, oranges and coffee.
- Lose weight. Obesity is the leading cause of acid reflux disease. Extra stomach fat places pressure on the abdomen. This pushes gastric juices up into the esophagus.
- Eat smaller meals. This works as large meals fill your stomach and put pressure on the LES. This makes acid reflux more likely.
- Avoid lying down as soon as you finish eating. Wait at least three hours before you lie down after a meal. Gravity normally helps keep acid reflux from developing. If you lie down for a nap after eating, gravity is not at work. Therefore, it’s easier for acid to move up into the esophagus.
