FDA Approved Drugs and User Comments: GABAPENTIN

For Hot Flashes: “For the night sweats/Insomnia, I started taking one 300 mg. Gabapentin in a.m. and 1 in evening – still had night sweats, so changed timing to 2 at 8:00 pm. Worked great for a couple of months, then gradually, the sweating, insomnia is creeping back. Doctor said to try 3 gabapentin, 1 in a.m. 1 at lunch, and 1 at dinner – wow, what a bad idea. Had sweats all night (1 per hour) so didn’t get any sleep. I’m going to try taking 3 at 9:00 p.m. tonight. Can’t bear another night of no sleep and sweats! I see a wide range of dosages that women have been taking, so I’m going to go with their suggestions and not my OB/GYN.”

For Small Fiber Neuropathy: “Did not help with the debilitating ache in my feet and hands. However, it made me fat, stupid and angry.”

For Anxiety: “Gabapentin has changed my life! I’ve suffered from anxiety for over 15 years and have tried everything. I’ve been to many doctors and tried paxil, effexor, Zoloft, buspar, Attivan, and clonazepam. Antidepressants did not help me at all. The stronger drugs helped at first but my anxiety overwhelmed the drugs unless I was on a high dose and was just out of it. I didn’t know what to do until a psychiatrist put me on gabapentin 300mg x3 daily. I can now live and do things almost like a normal person! Not one panic attack since I’ve started this medication(I was having them 2-3 tines a week.) At first I would get a little dizzy but it went away after a few days. If you are feeling hopeless please ask your doctor to try this medication. I’m so glad I have found it. I believe this drug could help a lot of people with anxiety!!”

For Neuropathic Pain: “I was prescribed gabapention for neuropathy, MS related. I only take it at night 300 mg. I have to say it worked well and I sleep better than I have in years. !! My only complaint is it makes me dizzy – if I get up at night after taking it. eg..to go to restroom etc I almost fell down while trying to get to my destination. But that aside my leg function is restored when I get up in the morning. Thats my reason for taking it in the first place. Would recommend giving this a try if you experience neuropathy.”

For Insomnia: “I started taking gabapentin for fibromyalgia and neuralgia, and it’s been extremely effective. I take 700 mg daily — 200mg in the am, 200mg in the afternoon, 300mg at night — and it’s also helped my sleep. Not just duration of sleep, but quality. I’m not waking up at night with pain in my arms and legs, and no panic attacks jolting me awake. I wake up feeling that I’ve slept and I’m not tired all day. The generic is very affordable even without Rx insurance, which I don’t have. This medication has changed my life, and while I realize not everyone can take every medication, I highly recommend this one.”

For Neuropathic Pain: “I started on 3 per day, but as my condition before neck surgery worsened I had to go up to 6 per day. After surgery the initial injury was fixed but, I was hurt by the surgeon and woke with a different condition, “damaged spine nerve pain in fingers, neck, elbow, so I went up to 12 per day just to function. Over time two years I have managed to get down to 3 per day one in morning two at night. But just lately I have gone to 4 per day. I suffer from restless legs at night time, can’t seem to settle til about 1am-2am. I have recently started acupunture and had good results with my neck, and have been advised to get a lymphatic massage to help with swelling in my hands, an on going process.”
