CK-MB test, also known as creatine kinase-MB test, plays a significant role in detecting whether you have a heart attack, a second or subsequent heart attack or not. It is also used to distinguish between skeletal muscle and heart muscle damage.
Creatine kinase-MB is a form of enzyme found primarily in heart muscle cells, and you can also find small amounts in skeletal muscles. But generally, its content is too low in your body to be detected.
If your CK levels are elevated and your CK-MB is elevated, it is indicated that you have recently had a heart attack.
If your CK-MB is elevated and the ratio of CK-MB to total CK (relative index) is more than 2.5-3, it is indicated that the heart may be damaged.
If your CK-MB is elevated and the ratio of CK-MB to total CK (relative index) is below 2.5-3, it is indicated that skeletal muscles may be damaged.
