There are three kinds of pink eye: viral, bacterial and allergic pink eye.

Viral pink eye (viral conjunctivitis) is mainly caused by varieties of viruses. There are two common viruses that cause pink eye: herpesvirus and adenovirus.

Bacterial pink eye (bacterial conjunctivitis) is usually caused by infection on the eye with bacteria. The most common bacteria include haemophilus, staphylococcus aureus, and streptococcus pneumonia.

Allergic pink eye (allergic conjunctivitis) is usually caused by allergies such as pollen, pet dander, medicines, dust mites, and molds.
