Buttock Enhancement: Types, Risks, Recovery

Buttock enhancement refers to cosmetic
surgeries to enhance the appearance of buttocks. This is done by buttock implants
or removing excess skin and fat that can be caused by significant weight loss,
increasing age and the effects of gravity. Patients who seek an increase in
size, shape, appearance and proportion to their butt typically request buttock
enhancement surgery.

Candidates for a buttock enhancement surgery should have realistic expectations for the procedure and be in general good health. It’s better that patients are non-smokers at a stable body weight.

There exist two types of buttock enhancement
surgeries: buttock augmentation and buttock

Buttock augmentation

Buttock augmentation is a surgical
procedure used to add volume and contour to the buttocks. There are two methods
for achieving this: fat transfer or buttock implants. Fat transfer is a
procedure that works by using the patient’s own fat to add natural-looking
volume to the buttocks. This technique is sometimes referred to as a Brazilian
Butt Lift. Butt implants are synthetic devices inserted into the buttock area
for dramatic increase in volume.

Buttock lift

A buttock lift is a more extensive
procedure and involves removing the love handles just above the buttocks. As
the excess skin and fat is removed and tightened, the buttocks are pulled
upward for improved contour. A true buttock lift does not typically involve
augmentation of the buttock.

According to statistics from the American
Society of Plastic Surgeons in 2017, the average cost of buttock augmentation with
fat grafting
is $4,096, the
average cost of butt implants is $4,884, and the average cost of a butt lift is $5,113.

Generally speaking, the cost of buttock
enhancement surgery can include:

  • Medical tests
  • Hospital or surgical facility costs
  • Surgeon’s fee
  • Anesthesia fees
  • Prescriptions for medication
  • Post-surgery garments
  • Any special pillows that may be required for your recovery

In your consultation with your surgeon, he
or she will tell you potential risks and complications of buttock enhancement surgeries
to help you make the decision. These possible risks include:

  • Swelling and pain
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Reactions to anesthesia
  • Seromas
  • Numbness or other changes in skin sensation
  • Recurrent looseness of skin
  • Scarring

In preparing for a buttock enhancement, your
surgeon may ask you to:

  • Get a blood test
  • Take certain medications or adjust your current medications
  • Stop smoking for at least 2 weeks in advance of the surgery
  • Avoid taking aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs as they can increase bleeding

If your surgery is an outpatient procedure,
be sure to arrange for someone who can drive you to and from surgery and stay with
you at least 24 hours after the surgery.

Surgical steps

Buttock augmentation procedures

Buttock augmentation can be achieved
through implants or transferring your existing fat, or sometimes a combination
of both. Your surgeon may choose between a variety of incision patterns and
techniques. Buttock implant procedure
includes these five steps:

  • Anesthesia
  • Making the incision
  • Placing the implant, which can apply different methods depending on
the type of implant, degree of enlargement desired and your body type
  • Closing the incisions
  • Waiting to see the results, which can be blurred by swelling and bruising
    in the short time

grafting or Brazilian butt lift
procedure is a
little different from buttock implant. Its surgical steps include:

  • Anesthesia
  • Liposuction performed through small, inconspicuous incisions
  • Injecting fat that is removed through liposuction from other body
  • Waiting to see the results, which are immediately visible but need a
year for the fat to take

Buttock lift procedures

Some surgical steps of buttock lift procedures are similar to those of buttock
augmentation procedures, which involve:

  • Anesthesia
  • Making an incision just below the waistline to remove excess skin
    and fat
  • Closing the incisions Sutures, skin adhesives, tapes or clips
  • Waiting to see the results, which are visible almost immediately but
need 3-6 months for the tissues to settle

Buttock augmentation with fat transfer is a
minimally invasive treatment with a relatively speedy recovery. The liposuction
is the most invasive part of the procedure, and this will involve some swelling
and bruising. But most of these symptoms will resolve within one to two weeks.

After the buttock augmentation with fat
grafting surgery, your surgeon will ask you to avoid prolonged sitting for
about two weeks. This is very important because prolonged sitting will damage
the fat. You will also be encouraged to sleep face down or on your side. When
you do have to sit, you will have to use a pillow or cushion placed behind the
legs to help raise the buttocks.

Buttock lift surgery involves larger incisions than buttock augmentation, and recovery from the procedure may take a bit longer. Patients may experience some pain, bruising, and swelling in the treated areas, but they will subside gradually.
