Bishop’s herb is also used in medical extreme cases. It belongs to the umbel family and is also called cartilagna or toothpick herb.
The active ingredients Visnagin and Khellin are obtained from the egg-shaped, about two millimeters long fruits. They work in diseases in which the so-called “smooth muscle” cramps, relaxing and can help to solve the cramps.
Smooth muscle clothes cavities inside the body, z. B in the blood vessels but also in the intestine, ureter, bladder or bronchi of the lungs.
Visnagin exerts a strong, long-lasting relaxing and expanding effect on the coronary arteries. This promotes the circulation of the heart muscle. This effect you can z. B. if you have constrictions of the coronary arteries or angina pectoris.
Khellin has an anticonvulsant effect on smooth muscle, especially on the urinary tract, bronchi, gastrointestinal tract and gallbladder.
The bhellin derived from the bishop’s herb is also used in the treatment of white spot disease (vitiligo). Here, the pigments responsible for skin coloration are no longer formed on some skin areas. By means of a special combination treatment of khellin and irradiation with UV-A radiation (“KUVA therapy”), however, the pigment formation can be stimulated again.
Patients either take khellin in tablet form prior to radiation or are given a khellin cream on the skin. About 70% of vitiligo patients respond to KUVA therapy. Despite this good success rate, the treatment is barely known.
The bishop’s herb is a very effective medicinal plant. However, the plant is not free from side effects.
Bishop’s herb application and side effects
The effect of the bishop’s herb has been known for a very long time and therefore, of course, is also used in modern medicine. So the bishop’s herb is mainly used in finished preparations, which you can usually find in the pharmacy without a prescription.
As an alternative to the finished preparations also offers a tea. For this purpose, crush about 0.5 g bishop herb (from the pharmacy, 1 tsp is about 2.5 g) in a mortar and pour 200 ml of boiling water over the powder. After 10 minutes, you are off the approach. Drink 2 to 3 cups daily.
With several days of use (including tea), nausea, dizziness and headache may occur. Always talk to your doctor about the application.
For liver diseases or the use of other medicines (eg painkillers, antibiotics, psychotropic drugs, hormone preparations) you should stop bishop’s herb.
