Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) Test is part of a routine health exam. It tells important information about the body’s metabolism, including the status of the kidneys as well as electrolyte and acid/base balance and level of blood glucose.
To get tested, you may need to fast for 10-12 hours prior to the blood sample collection.
What does the BMP Test Include?
The BMP includes the following tests:
Glucose
Calcium
Electrolytes
- Sodium
- Potassium
- CO2 (carbon dioxide, bicarbonate)
- Chloride
Kidney Tests
- BUN (blood urea nitrogen)
- Creatinine
Results of all the BMP tests are evaluated together to look for patterns of results. If several test results are abnormal, follow-up tests are needed.
