Basic Information about Mucositis

What is mucositis?

Mucositis is the condition that causes inflammation of the mucous membranes, which line the mouth, nose, eyelids, stomach, and other structures. Mostly, it appears as a side effect of chemotherapy or radiotherapy for cancer.

Symptoms include:

  • Pain in the mouth or throat;
  • Red swollen mouth and gums;
  • Sores in the mouth or on the gums or tongue

In general, this condition occurs after several days of cancer treatments, and may last several weeks.

Therefore, the patient can consult a dentist who deals with cancer patients before treating cancer. Or, he/she can increase brushing (with the softest tooth brush possible) to every 4 hours since the onset of the condition. In addition, the patient can also take medications to ease the symptoms.

Please consult your doctor for more information.
