Are acid reflux and GERD the same thing?
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and acid reflux and are closely related, but the two terms don’t necessarily mean the same thing.
Acid reflux refers to the backward flow of the acid produced by the stomach into the esophagus. Acid reflux is more specifically known as gastroesophageal reflux. If you experience acid reflux more than twice a week, you have GERD, a more severe form of reflux.
