5 Home Remedies for Menstrual Problems

Most women may experience dysmenorrhea, a dull, throbbing, or spasmodic pain in the lower abdomen just before or during their monthly period. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, sweating, dizziness, loose stools, and lower back and thigh pain. Women have little to do with this problem. The problem decreases with age and often disappears when women have given birth. Still, there are effective and easy home remedies to provide relief.

1. Cinnamon tea

Cinnamon contains anti-inflammatory and anticonvulsant properties that relieve menstrual cramps symptoms.

How to apply:

  • Add one teaspoon of cinnamon powder in a cup of water.
  • Put a teabag in the water for 2 – 3 minutes.
  • Alternatively, add cinnamon in your breakfast, on toast, or on sweet rolls.

2. Ginger

Ginger lowers pain levels, relieves menstrual cramps and calms the stomach.

How to apply:

  • Eat raw or cooked ginger in the form of ginger ale, biscuits, snacks or sweets.
  • Boil slices of ginger, honey and a pinch of salt for 4 – 6 minutes and drink twice a day.
  • Add 1/2 teaspoon of ginger (either dried powder or grated) in a cup of boiling water for 3 – 5 minutes, and drink three times daily for best results.

3. Peppermint

Peppermint is a well-known remedy for menstrual problems, as it is a natural muscle relaxant and appetite suppressant.

How to apply:

  • Add a teaspoon of dried peppermint leaves or powder to a cup of boiling water.
  • Drink 1 – 2 times a day.

4. Chamomile tea

Chamomile contains natural anti-inflammatory properties that can relieve menstrual cramps.

How to apply:

  • Add a teaspoon of dried chamomile powder in a cup of boiling water.
  • Drink regularly to prevent cramping.

5. Heat or hot compress

Applying heat or hot compress to the lower abdomen and lower back may help relieve pain so effectively and this is one of the most common and traditional remedies.

How to apply:

  • Put a warm heating pad or hot water bottle on your stomach.
  • Take a warm bath or use a hot towel.
